Garlic Varieties for Calgary

HARDNECK VARIETIES ~ grow well in Northern conditions.

GLAZED PURPLE STRIPE ~

Wrappers of bulbs have a glossy, burnished finish and are thick. Nice flavor and very beautiful. Cultivars include:

  • Purple Glazer
  • Vekak

MARBLED PURPLE STRIPE ~

Hot and spicy flavour to this garlic. Fewer cloves per head. Cultivars include:

  • Duganski
  • Fireball
  • Siberian

PORCELAIN ~

Strong Flavour.  Large cloves have white wrappers. Fewer cloves per plant Harvested later in the season.  Stores very well.  Cultivars

PURPLE STRIPE ~

ROCAMBOLE ~

WEAKLY BOLTING HARDNECK VARIETIES ~

Stem or stalk may be hard or soft depending on cultivar.

 ASIATIC ~

Larger, plump cloves that store for only a short period. Early maturing (check for ripeness early before stalk falls down). Cultivars include:

  • Asian Tempest
  • Chinese Purple

CREOLE ~

Part of Silverskin Group.  Grow well in warmer winter conditions. Very nice looking with colourful cloves. Mild flavor. Stores well. Interesting history.  Cultivars include:

TURBAN ~

Large cloves that do not store for long periods. Taste varies depending on cultivar. Also mature early and do well in warmer conditions. Cultivars

SOFTNECK VARIETIES

SILVERSKIN ~

Store very well. Heads have many cloves. Generally ripen late in the season but a lot of variation between cultivars. Taste varies depending on cultivar. The garlic for braiding.  Cultivars include

 ARTICHOKE ~

Taste of cultivar may vary from mild to strong. Most commonly cultivated garlic for worldwide market. Short plant with large bulb that stores well. Many cloves of varying sizes per head that can be difficult to peel. Does well in warmer winter climates. Cultivars include;
