Becoming a Registered Society

Becoming a Registered Society in Alberta

Some community gardens find that, after operarting for a few years, the group would like to become a not-for-profit registered society in order to be eligible for a wider variety of funding opportunities.

Several legal requirements must be satisfied in order to become a society and maintain your registered society status.   For example, a garden group that is a registered society must have an active board of directors, a set of bylaws,  an annual general meeting and submit audited financial statements each year.  The legal requirements to apply to become a registered society can be found on the Government of Alberta website.
