Water-Wise Gardening

Over the past few years in Alberta, a continued lack of precipitation, in summer as well as winter, has created drought conditions. Our gardens, public parks and green spaces have suffered from periodic hot, dry weather causing the City of Calgary to restrict watering on a number of occasions.

Recognizing that a change in approach
could help Calgarians adapt their gardens
to these harsher conditions, The Calgary
Horticultural Society will soon be offering
a series of virtual water-wise garden
modules for viewing with several featured
    plants for each one.

The objective of water-wise gardening is to reduce treated water usage. Water-efficient landscaping is not only about selecting plants that are more drought tolerant, but also about planning the placement of less drought tolerant plants in places where they can grow and thrive with no or little extra water.
